FAA Drone Crackdown: $75,000 Fines, FBI Drone School & Shield AI X-BAT Copy title
Drone operators face a new enforcement environment as the FAA takes a tougher approach to violations, with potential fines reaching $75,000 per violation and possible certificate action. In UAV News Talk #456, Max Trescott and David Vanderhoof explain what the changes mean for recreational and commercial drone pilots.
The FBI is also expanding its counter-drone training center at Redstone Arsenal following the seizure of more than 700 unauthorized drones during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
On the military front, Shield AI's X-BAT autonomous VTOL fighter has attracted $400 million in announced government and private investment. Meanwhile, Ukrainian engineers are extending FPV drone range by jettisoning depleted batteries, borrowing an idea from World War II fighter aircraft.
Other stories include Meteomatics' Strato weather drone, designed to reach 39,000 feet; drone threats that prompted the withdrawal of U.S. bombers from RAF Fairford; and PAL-V's plans for flying-car pilot training.
Plus, the video of the week features a spectacular FPV drone tour through L.L.Bean's 150,000-square-foot flagship store in Freeport, Maine.
